Air Purification Systems: Why should you use them?

No one wants to worry about every breath they take, but the unpleasant fact is that airborne health risks surround us both indoors and out, and most of us don’t fully realize the effects.

Pollen, dust, and other allergens cause discomfort and lower the quality of life for millions of Americans, but many people do not completely understand are the more serious health risks posed by certain indoor contaminants.

When we think of air pollution, we tend to picture industrial smokestacks, agricultural pesticides, and smog from vehicles. While these things are a genuine threat to our health, they also tend to be localized. Many of us do not live near any such obvious sources of pollution, making it easy to ignore the risks.

However, an overwhelming amount medical research shows that we are exposed to dangerous levels of contamination daily in our own homes. This can have a profoundly negative effect over time.

Toxic chemical compounds and volatile organic compounds are released by many common objects found in modern homes, including paint, varnish, carpet, plastics, electronics, cleaning products, upholstery, clothing, building materials, cosmetics, and even air fresheners. The cumulative load of these pollutants builds up in the typical house, often becoming a more serious and direct threat than industrial air pollution. This can have grave consequences, especially on developing children and people with illnesses. It’s not a scare tactic; it’s the truth. The following are just a few links which can provide you with a greater understanding of the risks:

From the World Health Organization

Indoor air pollution is responsible for the death of 1.6 million people every year – that’s one death every 20 seconds.
Globally, pneumonia and other acute lower respiratory infections represent the single most significant cause of death in children less than five years of age. Exposure to indoor air pollution more than doubles the risk of pneumonia, and is therefore responsible for more than 900,000 of the 2 million deaths pneumonia causes annually.

From the American Lung Association

Air pollution contributes to many forms of lung disease, including respiratory tract infections, asthma, and lung cancer. Lung disease claims close to 335,000 lives in America every year, and is the third leading cause of death in the United States. Over the last decade, the death rate for lung disease has risen faster than that of almost any other major disease.

An estimated one out of every fifteen homes in the United States contains radon levels above 4pci/L, the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency-recommended action level. Radon, a naturally occurring gas, can enter the home through cracks in the foundation floor and walls, drains, and other openings. Indoor radon exposure is estimated to be the second leading cause of lung cancer. A recent report by the National Research Council estimates that radon is responsible for between 15,000 and 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States.

From the American Medical Association:

Air pollution — mainly from vehicles, industry, and power plants — raises the chances of lung cancer and heart disease in people subjected to long-term exposure, according to a report in the March 6 Journal of the American Medical Association (Vol. 287, No. 9: 1132-1141).
